I have often wondered why the moon changes shape but was never really satisfied with the answer I gave myself - you know, it's the shadow of the earth on the moon's face caused by the sun, story. (That is actually the explanation for a lunar eclipse) Now I know the true reason. A shadow is caused by something getting in the way of the light (from the sun), so half of the moon is in a shadow caused by the other half. Now because the moon is going around the the earth you see the shadow from different angles, so you see the moon lit up in different shapes, these are called the phases of the moon. So basically the moon doesn't change shape at all, its shadow just moves around it. Click on this link and you'll see a nice explanatory animation. www.daveansell.co.uk/?q=node/25Hurray! Learnt something new.

Good grief, marchesarosa, next you'll be coming over to climate science. Is this a new leaf? (Hope so).

You mean joining the likes of Prof Brian Cox, who told a kid on a phone-in that the phases of the moon were caused by the Earth's shadow on the moon's face? motls.blogspot.com/2012/03/brian-cox-and-lunar-phases.htmlAt least I kept my misconception to myself and didn't broadcast it to the world!

Apparently not, pea-brain. And you've not followed my point either. So I'll spell it out
"Authorities" who lecture us on the climate catastrophes in store courtesy of CO2 cannot afford to make juvenile mistakes about the moon in public.

Good item MR I have never applied any thought to that subject (in that way it seems that Cox and I have something in common) It's good to have one's preconceptions challenged
