Me thinks they worry about emissions too much. As far as I can see, the government has the right strategy which will deal with this issue in a very unique way. In a recent report we are to close coal fired power stations on the orders of the EU. These closures will mean that our "capacity margin" (which is currently around 20% , although I was told that 25% is considered the correct level) will diminish to 4% by 2020. As grid energy fluctuations can vary by more than this, blackouts will ensue during periods of high demand. And this is where the government plan comes into its own. With large areas of the UK blacked out, our emissions will fall dramatically thus satisfying not only the green movement, but the EU to boot. Cunning buggers. In one fell swoop we have got rid of the need for expensive power station building, dramatically reduced CO2 emissions and with no light pollution in large parts of the country we'll have the bonus of being able to spend glorious hours in our cold gardens viewing the universe. It's win, win...I think! P

Could they really be that devious, principled?
I think they just won't close down the old stations (or they will mothball them) until the supply situation has resolved itself. At least I hope so! Mrs Merkel had done a U-turn and is now building more coal-powered stations.
If Germany does it can the UK be far behind?

We have a history of following the Germans indeed. From the Channel to the Elbe the last time.
