I think this topic is mathematical in nature which is why pose it here. In very simple terms, so I can get a handle on it, what are the fundamental principles of information theory? This question was raised once before but was never really made very clear (at least to me) so I pose it again in the hope that some bright spark will be able to provide an idiot's guide.

May I recommend James Gleick's latest - The Information? Very good, and very entertaining.

Thanks. I've had a look at one of his online lectures plus an interview about his book and he seems pretty good at putting over his ideas so I'm trying to download his book from Amazon to my Kindle.
Thanks again.
