Last night I was cooking. No problems, I enjoy it and do it daily.
I picked up the glass lid of a pan and the handle fell off. This is a stirrup type handle fixed through the lid in two places. An expensive set of pans.
Close examination showed that the rivets, which I had assumed were stainless like the rest of the pan and handle were in fact aluminium. The cause was that after just a few years in the dishwasher on a regular basis the aluminium had eroded away. I haven't measured it but I would guess by at least 0.5mm .
I have always known that the caustic in the dishwasher tablets and aluminium are not good companions but was amazed at the amount of corrosion.
The sequel is, the pan lid now has two rather fancy SS bolts and dome nuts fitted, after I had raided stores and got the apprentice moving.
I think the rest of the set might be in for a makeover.

Good move! Best to check the handle rivets too.

Good move! Best to check the handle rivets too. I think I might just do that Alan!

I owe you Alan! Just checked and the three smaller pans ALL have dodgy handles. Larger two less so, but they tend to have been hand washed. Interestingly the rivets have a thin SS coating swaged on the inside face. So he now has five pans and four lids to do!
The apprentice is going to be busy. I did have to get him to re-do the first lid as he had left a rough edge, but he will learn. Same way as we all did, get it right or do it again!
