I’ve just finished reading Prof Robert Carter’s “Climate: the Counter Consensus”.
It’s nice sometimes to drag yourself away from the message boards and just read at leisure a broad brush approach to the argument over AGW to remind yourself what the bones of contention really are between climate alarmists and sceptics.
Prof Carter’s latest is an easy read which covers all the main ground in the climate debate and starts and ends with the declaration that the null hypothesis of Natural Climate Change remains unfalsified.
* The geological context sets the scene of the timescale on which we need to understandand climate change - instead of the derisory 30 years allocated by the IPCC to the concept of “climate” as opposed to “weather”.
* The present is portrayed in the context of the holocene - we are actually at the cooling end of it as revealed by ice-core data.
* The virtual reality world of the computer programmers who build the GCMs that have replaced REAL natural observational stuff as ‘evidence’ in the climate debate.
* The media who have willingly dumbed down the climate message to an already scientifically illiterate western public because alarmism sells papers and advertising just as much as it finances public research.
* The contradictions between the data produced by balloons and satellites as opposed to surface stations.
* Glaciations, sunspots, ice-cores, cosmic radiation and of course, ocean oscillations.
* The debinking of sea-level rise and ocean "acidification".
* The unknowns of the carbon sinks and sources, the contradictory isotope evidence and the all-important residence time of CO2 in the atmosphere.
* The “Noble Cause” corruption of those politicos and “Team” members like Hansen, Mann and the CRU crew who KNOW they have the right answer and are willing to tweak the findings to spell out the “Truth” to the masses.
* The neglect of the ever-present real natural climate catastrophes actually claiming millions of lives in favour of the ersatz CO2-induced variety dreamed up by the fabulously wealthy green NGOs and politicos who dispense lavish tax-payer funded grants to “friendly” scientists who have forgotten the meaning of their calling.
* The unholy cost of the “Precautionary Principle”.
That about covers Prof Carter’s outline of the Climate debate. Read it and get yourself a grounding in or refresh your understanding of the subject that has so falsely pre-occupied the world for so long.
