I should just point out that what others have said is an explanation of HOW to do calculus in algebraic terms, not solely an explanation of what calculus IS, and I think my graphs stuff is a better example of that.
Slopes and areas under graphs, that is what it IS, the algebra is just HOW to do it if you have a mathematical expression for the curve, and is based on what I said about slopes and areas.
The graph-based picture I think also gives you a handle on the multidimensional case, more than one variable, even as far as partial derivatives if you want to get into that.
