I heard a news item this morning where it was said that if you own an i-phone your movements can be tracked. They know where you are, and apparently you can download a simple programme that shows that on a map. You would have to switch the phone off to circumvent that. That could be the next Press scandal I suppose. Footballers visiting ladies of the night or MP's having rather luxurious lunches at others expense can be traced without a problem. And although I live an entirely blameless life others might find that wives can check on where they have been. Golf suddenly morphs into an indoor sport! But does anyone know if that only applies to the i-phone, or is it all G3 phones, for example htc phones.

For safety, I think one should assume that any mobile phone that is switched on, can be tracked. Those that have GPS can be located to within a few feet but it is also possible to find the area that a mobile phone is in from the cell of the network that it is using. The iPhone has an airline mode, in which it does not transmit. If you can't bear to switch the damn thing off. You could set it to airline mode. Like you, I live an entirely blameless life and only think about this kind of thing for the benefit of others!

Interesting mak 2. I assume it is all G3 phones?
When I have a moment I will see if my phone has tracked my movements if I can locate the software I hard aboput.. I imagine that to track anyone else you would need not only their telephone number but also maybe a pin No.
I will ask a passing journalist.........

If you own any phone with apps loaded your surfing will be monitored. 50% of iPhone and iPad apps contain some form of snooping (see New Scientist). Android users don't be too smug. Miscreants aim for the biggest targets. 4 app writers & Apple are being sued in the US (class action) for failing to vet the products they design &/or sell. If you get the app from an unverified vendor - expect serious snooping or identity theft to be highly probable. Of course you can give the information constantly to the person you are meeting via an app, or to check on kiddies etc.
Which, in a neat twist of unspeakable arrogance usually reserved for Apple evangelists, - I shall be buying a Nokia using Windows. (sans on-line maps) and certainly no apps. Providing I can find a phone shop that knows what it is selling. So there is a 5% probability I will bother.
FWIW all calls' to and from address/number/cell location are logged by the network. It is a legal requirement and has been for 3 years. That goes for all e-mails too. If you are up to no good and the authorities suspect - they will be monitoring content. They used fourier analysis 35 years ago to detect certain languages automatically. If the effort proves worth it they switch to human ears.

You are not just being tracked on your mobile phone using GPS but some stores now have trackers and can tell where you went and by that, what you looked at and how long you spent looking. American security is monitoring ALL calls for certain buzz words, as they routinely monitor the internet, being a bunch of paranoid freaks.
