There was a piece on the Today programme this morning in which someone was saying that Laser communication could solve a lot of problems. You did not need to lay miles of fibre optic cable, all you needed was lasers on buildings. He did not say but one assumes clear line of sight. The argument for laser communication is that it is faster than fibre optic, roughly twice the speed. The driver is the speed at which deals are done on the various exchanges, Ideally those should be synchronous with regard to time.
Now I confess to know very little about this, but I always thought that a laser beam, being essentially a light beam, would not work in cloud or fog, nor in heavy rain.
Am I right?

Yes. And it's not secure - you can detect the modulation of scattered radiation.
