There are several, even the majority, especially if you count the members bullied into silence by those like you who aren't An extraordinary claim! It's true that there have been some real scientists on this board It's true that there are several "real" scientists and engineers on this board, not just the one Fascinating has taken to slobbering over since she learned he was leftwing. If you're referring to me, first, I am a philosopher, by anyone's definition or criteria, and two, who have I ever "bullied"?! Do tell.

Being bullied by a philosopher must be a bit like being savaged by a dead sheep. The essence of philosophy is surely "we can't know anything" so those who do know a lot, just walk away. Try harder to conceal your abysmal ignorance of philosophy, Alan. I presume you're making a botched reference to Socrates: I do not know anything, was his claim. Nothing to do with the "essence of philosophy" - on the contrary, he devoted his whole life to trying to work out how we do know anything, and more importantly, to him anyway, why. Your humble claim to know a lot might distinguish you from him in that respect, but you certainly have no more clue of how you do so - at least, judging by your comical ignorance of the more than two thousand years of deep thought about the question since - and his main point that what we'd now call "science" does not address the more fundamental questions of value and purpose has of course also been abundantly borne out.

It was mrsonde, qualified in PHILOSOPHY, who said that there are several scientists. Jean agreed with that, but took issue with his outlandish claim that they had been bullied into silence. Nothing outlandish about it. And it's not just my claim - the accusation follows her around from board to board like a bad smell. As for the "qualified" and "professional" elaborations you've now made: why? Science is too important and general an activity to be limited to those with professional qualifications, which have only been in existence for a century and a half at most. I thus have no hesitation in calling myself a scientist - I do science every day, and besides that as Liz Bonnin constantly like to say, it's above all a state of mind. "Engineer" is a little more occupation specific, and I wouldn't refer to myself as such, though I've invented several mechanical devices, and exchanged patent rights to an electronic one, and similarly spend most of my days these past few years fabricating a design of my own derived from fundamental physical principles. But my mind doesn't really work that way - not very well anyway, and very far from easily. Nay and Jonjel are "real" engineers, though.

He loves me really, as does Nick. They just can't bring themselves to admit it. I have admitted it, several times. I just wish you'd do something about your enormous backside.

Please tell us about the science that you do every day, and the electronic device that you have invented.

Try harder to conceal your abysmal ignorance of philosophy, Alan. QED Is that you "walking away" because you know so much? Or trying harder to conceal?

Please tell us about the science that you do every day, and the electronic device that you have invented. No, I don't think so. Not necessary, not relevant, not productive, and to you not enjoyable. If you want to start having civilised conversations, start being civil.

OK, so you don't do any science and you haven't invented any electronic device.

OK, so you don't do any science and you haven't invented any electronic device. No, I simply don't choose to engage in a personal conversation with you. Because you're insulting, unpleasant, extremely tiresome when explanation of any complexity at all is required due to your lack of education and intelligence, unable to be either informative or engaging, and in every respect that I can think of a complete bore. Understand now?
