SO WHY ALL THE SNOWSTORMS? asks Dr Roy Spencer? While we would like to think our own personal experience of the snowiest winter ever in our entire, Methuselah-ian lifespan has some sort of cosmic — or even just global — significance, I would like to offer this plot of global oceanic precipitation variations from the same instrument that measured the above sea surface temperatures (AMSR-E on NASA’s Aqua satellite): Note that precipitation amounts over the global-average oceans vary by only a few percent. What this means is that when one area gets unusually large amounts of precipitation, another area must get less. Precipitation is always associated with rising air, and so a large vigorous precipitation system in one location means surrounding regions must have enhanced sinking air (with no precipitation). In the winter, of course, the relatively warmer oceans next to cold continental air masses leads to snowstorm development in coastal areas. If the cold air mass over the midwest and eastern U.S. is not dislodged by warmer Pacific air flowing in from the west, then the warm oceanic air from the Gulf of Mexico and western Atlantic keeps flowing up and over the cold dome of air, producing more snow and rain. The “storm track” and jet stream location follows that boundary between the cold and warm air masses.

Oh dear, I wake up to snow again in Leeds ! And just on the day when the ridge tiles and splendid terracotta finials were going to be fixed on my handsome new garden shed! Drat.

One to two inches of snow fell in San Francisco on February 5, 1976, and dusting the Marin Headlands, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Photo: Art Frisch / The Chronicle "The weather pattern is certainly shaping up for a significant blast of Arctic air to invade California beginning Friday. The question being asked is whether the elements are in place for there to be snow all the way down to sea level around San Francisco Bay. The last time there was a significant covering of snow at sea level in the Bay Area was February 5, 1976." More here wattsupwiththat.com/2011/02/23/low-snow-in-sfo-to-be-or-not-to-be/#more-34585

Bishop Hill says, Snow has fallen in Lahore, apparently for the first time ever.LAHORE: The city on Saturday received heavy rain and hailstorm measuring 4.5 millimetres, which carpeted several roads and sidewalks with snow sending a wave of cheerfulness among citizens. The hailstorm, witnessed at isolated places in the city in the evening, was enjoyed by citizens especially children, who were seen forcing their parents to stop by footpaths to play with snow at Zafar Ali Road, Gulberg Main Boulevard and Davis Road. There seems to be some doubt over whether it was snow or hail, but there are pictures of snowmen on the page linked. Comments under this video suggest that it was graupel, which seems to be something of a cross between the two. www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2011\02\27\story_27-2-2011_pg13_1Citizens cheer as hail turns city white

"Far from contradicting global warming, record snowfall is predicted by climate models and consistent with our expectation of more extreme precipitation....." blah blah blah
Yes, according to the alarmists' "models" warm (aka cold), drought (aka floods), snow (aka rain) are all "consistently" increasing due to trace gas CO2! Marvelous!
Louise, it snows when it gets colder for some reason, not when it gets warmer. Geddit?
Ever heard of "ice-ages", Louise? When winter snow fails to melt and just accumulates year to year? Must have been very WARM then, according to your philosophy.
I think you should do some serious thinking about what warmer and colder really mean.
(The tomatoes understand it.)

Remember this, Louise? The number of perceived extreme weather events is directly proportional to the development of the news media compounded by the presence of video cameras and mobile phones everywhere. There is instant footage – vital for today’s ‘news’ – of every incident in every corner of the globe. Images of these extremes are now piped into to virtually every home on a twentyfour hour basis.
The idea prevalent amongst climate alarmists of ever more frequent extreme weather events is therefore an artifact of media coverage exacerbated by the credulity of the gullible of the western world.
The impact of extreme weather is a function of population growth and growing real estate values.
Discuss.radio4scienceboards.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=witter&action=display&thread=528You never did "discuss" it, did you, Louise? Why think things over for yourself when you have a crib sheet that tells you the science is settled and all sceptics are numpties?

it snows when it gets colder for some reason, not when it gets warmer. Geddit? Rubbish. If it snows at -10C then it will still snow when it warms to -5C. The only difference is that the air will contain more water vapour and therefore produce more snow, not less. Snowfall is not a good proxy for temperature!

The Earth alternates between "hothouse" and "ice-house" climatic conditions.
Contrary to the perception of some, we are still in an "ice-house" phase and just VERY lucky to be an brief inter-glacial respite period. Enjoy it while it lasts because the Earth is teeming with life and potential and many good things.

"Snowfall is not a good proxy for temperature!"
It's more reliable than tree rings!
I bet the local temperature in Lahore dropped alarmingly when the snow/hail fell.

"Snowfall is not a good proxy for temperature!" It's more reliable than tree rings! But not as reliable as thermometer readings! As usual, you cherry pick, and confuse weather with climate. There are far more record high temperatures occurring than record lows. Look at 2010 for example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_temperatures
