[Aquatic ape] an intriguing idea but not testable, unfortunately, because such aquatic adaptations would not have been fossilized. AFAIK, hominid fossils have not been found in places that suggest they were living beside the sea. (Although I am typing off the top of my head, here, without checking.)

That would be because sea level has risen hundreds of feet since then and the littoral route of colonisation is now under water?
Fossils have been found round around East African lakes.

Is it not true that our lineage, and I mean all of us, can be traced back to a male that lived 80,000 years ago and a female that lived 170,000 years ago. I cannot remember them personally, but wonder what happened to those before them.
