"Attack of the jellyfish: Sea creatures shut down ANOTHER power station amid claims population surge is due to climate change" www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2011565/Jellyfish-shut-power-station-amid-claims-climate-change-caused-population-surge.html"Scientists say the number of jellyfish are on the rise thanks to the increasing acidity of the world’s oceans driving away the blubbery creatures' natural predators. The warning came in a report into ocean acidification – an often overlooked side effect of burning fossil fuel. Studies have shown that higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere doesn’t just trigger climate change but can make the oceans more acidic. Since the start of the industrial revolution, acidity levels of the oceans have gone up 30 per cent, marine biologists say."

"Somerset nuclear plant needed to keep the lights on, says Energy Secretary" Thursday, July 14, 2011 Western Daily Press "Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has warned people they either have to face blackouts or else embrace investment as he announced that nuclear reactors and green energy will play vital roles in keeping the country’s lights switched on." "Vincent de Rivaz, chief executive of EDF, the firm behind plans for new nuclear at Hinkley Point, Somerset, said: “Current UK electricity prices are driven by volatile fossil fuel prices, which are subject to global events outside Britain's control. " "Alan Rayment, chief operating officer of Horizon Nuclear Power, which is developing plans for a new reactor at Oldbury, south Gloucestershire, welcomed the announcement." "But Andy Atkins of Friends of the Earth said: “If we keep relying on dirty imported energy and expensive nuclear to power our homes, we'll all pay the price for years to come." www.thisissomerset.co.uk/Somerset-nuclear-plant-needed-lights-says-Energy/story-12940928-detail/story.html---- "Stop Hinkley Expansion (SHE) was founded in 1983 to campaign against the proposed Hinkley C development." July 15, 2011 Nuclear Deterrence: In Supercomputing We Trust "Schneidmiller begins by pointing out that skeptics believe that "computer modeling cannot effectively replace actual testing in terms of ensuring the upkeep of today's stockpile," .... "The problem is that without some sort of physical testing, there is no assurance that the real-world behavior of the weapons is being reflected in computer model." www.hpcwire.com/hpcwire/2011-07-15/nuclear_deterrence:_in_supercomputing_we_trust.htmlComment: Here in nuclear weaponry, we have 'skeptics' who do not have full faith in computer simulation of effects, before, during and after a single event [bang]. full article here.... www.globalsecuritynewswire.org/gsn/nw_20110713_3038.php

Stu While I feel that no-one should now be allowed to test nuclear weapons, what exactly do we do when, through advanced technology (see quote from your link), we find that a country has broken the ban?
We could apply sanctions, but who would that hurt in countries like N.Korea, Iran, Pakistan, India etc? Not the ruling elite, that's for sure.

P. "N.Korea, Iran, Pakistan, India" 'The West' does tend to tell everyone that they know best, and strut around the world stage 'pontificating' and other countries must find that annoying. We 'invented' the atomic weapon, although others were not far behind us, so it should be expected that such a weapon of mass devastation would be mimicked by others. It can't be 'uninvented'. N.Korea and Iran would ' by Western eyes, be considered possible 'nuclear nutters'. Short of totally destroying them there's not much to be done. With their weapons [and nuclear reactors] they immediately threaten their near neighbours. With N.Korea, the Chinese are the ones who deal with them, they would not allow things to get too far out of hand in that area. Any intervention from 'The West' is seen as 'interference', and so jeopardises our relations with them. Iran, in ancient past has been an area of scientific excellence and still has a core of capable scientists. Iran is a threat to Israel. Nuclear war between them must be seen as a possibility. Some of the neighbours of both would actively encourage such actions from Iran. Saudi, Jordan and Egypt would not relish the thought. Russia would be slow to react and would dither through indecision, but eventually come down on the side of stopping it, if through no other reason than self preservation. The Chinese wouldn't be too impressed by that time. Pakistan, is an interesting case, for whilst its own area can be 'ordered', it's its 'area of influence' that can pose a problem, ie. Afghanistan, here, given a few years [relatively] would pose problems. All in all any country that likes to put its mind to it can become nuclear. Frankly there's not much we can do about it. The biggest nuclear threat to the UK is France. An accident with one of their power stations would spell disaster for us. This Wiki will demonstrate what is meant... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_France ...'tap on' the map. There are four on the coast directly facing our South coast, and a fifth slightly inland. Add to that the prevailing sea current, the normal wind circulation.... StuartG

Examples of offending YouTube videos include excerpts of TV shows with controversial comments like footage showing smoke emitted from the nuclear reactors, and an ex-TEPCO employee speaking on his Fukushima experiences. Likewise, Twitter accounts with too much content regarding nuclear power and radiation issues have been disrupted." www.ukprogressive.co.uk/new-japan-law-cleanses-bad-nuclear-news/article13589.html

Cheong Wa Dae officials said the pact sets the legal framework for cooperation and would pave the way for the Indian government to purchase Korean-made nuclear reactors. At present, Russia, France and U.S. companies are involved in nuclear power plant construction projects in India. " Aside: Beautiful grounds, Cheong Wa Dae... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_House#Setting
