Hmmm..... Could STA be in fact one Gerda? They certainly share the very same intolerance and closed mindedness. They certainly both prefer personal attack to intellectual discussion But it seems to me that STA is too well mannered to be Gerda Not that her manners are good; in fact they are appalling, but still better than Gerda's, although Gerda may have mellowed over the years - perhaps she now drives a rig with flashing lights on the cab that meet her ambition? Still who cares? STA is a dumbkopf , a well read dumkopf albeit, but then, with the internet, everyone is an instant expert on anything if they so wish to present themselves. Mind you it is interesting that Simplex, a dumkopf grammarian that has no interest or knowledge in science has arrived to lend support to STA!
Now I wonder what that is all about.
But then I ponder, would a truck driver marry a mataloe and then why would a dim gramarian join in the fray? Is this a menage a troix made in hell?
;D ;D

Then why not introduce a few topics of your own? That would be in the interests of this MB.

Menage a trois? What a thought!

Then why not introduce a few topics of your own? That would be in the interests of this MB. It might - but introducing topics in the hope of trapping the unwary into statements you can then pick apart and poke fun at doesn't seem very productive, all things considered. And that's all that seems to happen here.

It might - but introducing topics in the hope of trapping the unwary into statements you can then pick apart and poke fun at doesn't seem very productive, all things considered. And that's all that seems to happen here. I think you're exaggerating, but frankly, if you feel that way I suggest you look for another MB. Would it not be more productive to try and influence things from 'within' as you feel improvement is necessary? One thing I have learnt is that posters come and go but MB's carry on and there does not appear to be a wealth of science MB's out there at present. It is inevitable that you are going to have a variety of personalities making posts but that surely enriches the interchange of views and, at least on this particular MB, plenty of latitude is allowed to express one's sometimes passionately held views. My experience of some other MB's has been that one is not allowed to be too 'controversial' on pain of having the thread closed or even suffering banishment by the moderators which very often can and does stifle real debate and is just boring. There is a sensible limit of course to good taste and this is where moderation is essential but I have seen many times on other MB's in the past lively debates terminated because of being 'off-topic' simply because the debate has deepened and inevitably introduced new aspects which this or that mod considered irrelevant. The nature of debate is that it will inevitably widen out because nothing can be totally discussed in isolation and too many 'trigger happy' moderators simply have the effect of making discussions perfunctory and simplistic. I think adults should be treated like adults and not continually monitored for what are perceived as transgressions against petty rules.

Lots of silly remarks, but still no answer to the Feynman question..............
And what a load of silly prejudice against truck-drivers, some of my best friends are diesel dykes who even if they don't actually drive a truck, like the image. But what else have we come to expect from such silly people..........certainly not straight answers (no pun intended).

This the crux of the question. Do macro objects, left alone, 'collapse' as a result of some kind of gravitational collapse at a critical point (as Roger Penrose seems to think) or do they simply collapse to form objects because their wavefunction is so entangled with the wavefunction of the brain that they are 'piloted' by the brain's predilection to form organized patterns?

A compete description of your modus ? Not really, carnyx. I may have picked apart a statement of yours, but I certainly did not lure you into making it in the first place. ( Simplex munditiis it was going to be, but I thought you probably wouldn't understand that.)

Thank you for a considered reply, abacus. What you describe here is exactly what a MB should be: It is inevitable that you are going to have a variety of personalities making posts but that surely enriches the interchange of views and, at least on this particular MB, plenty of latitude is allowed to express one's sometimes passionately held views. My experience of some other MB's has been that one is not allowed to be too 'controversial' on pain of having the thread closed or even suffering banishment by the moderators which very often can and does stifle real debate and is just boring. There's no problem with passionately held views about the topic under discussion. It's when those views spill over into passionately held views about the identity, character, academic attainment, previous employment history and supposed off-board associations of the poster you're disagreeing with that the board is in trouble. Draw back from that sort of thing, and you'll be all right.

So when are you going to discuss science?

When the atmosphere becomes more positive, more focussed on the topics under discussion, less taken up with personal jibes.
I think it may be getting there, but I'm not sure yet.

Consider this for example, from an adjacent thread:
Nothing wrong with that - carefully argued and substantial.
But then the poster can't resist adding:
What a pity!

STA is not perfect, I am not perfect, nobody is perfect, ok?
Oh, I see you are a female too. Hmmm...
