Where is a good honest place to look for figures on fishing stocks. With our involvement with the EU, Brit fishing seems to have gone. We appear not to defend our stocks against anyone except our native fishermen. I found this in the Guardian [always a good quote!] it states ... "I don't spend much time doing this because the Catalan fishmongers don't like my ruler - or me. They don't want to talk about why they are selling tiny hake (one of Europe's most endangered species) and why not a single fish in the market has any 'sustainable' labelling. " So, according to this small fish do get sold but not in UK? www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/may/11/fishing.foodand then this on 'discards' www.defra.gov.uk/environment/marine/cfp/discards/but it's source is DEFRA. So the sources are possibly one-sided. Is hake/whiting [is there a difference?] fished for in home waters? Is fish generally less numerous because the world population is that much greater now? Are 'foreign' fishers nicking our home water grub? or is it the fish are more canny than we give them credit for and found places where we are not? Thanks, StuartG

Thanks, StuartG There are no accurate figures on fish stocks. There are, however, reams of politically motivated "science" and input from green lobbyists. All of which can be discounted. Hake and Whiting are commonly fished in UK waters. I've seen minute fish openly sold in Barcelona - most of which comes from UK waters. I have no problem with this - better sold and eaten than dumped over the side dead. Speaking to a freind of mine a few months back and he's seeing massive hauls of cod. So much so that he has to move far from traditional grounds to avoid them since he has a limited quota. The fishing debate is completely distorted by lies and propaganda...lots of it coming from the fisheries associations themselves. Political influence and a place at the EU trough is the prize.

Thanks for that. I've mentioned about fishing on another forum, and was trying to find some details. No offense to You but it comfirms my suspicions. It has all the hall marks of political influence. "better sold and eaten than dumped over the side dead" Yes, that was how I felt about the Catalans, and then compared it to our UK fishers treatment. "It's the rules Sir" Cheers, StuartG
