Big subject. Where do we start?
I can't take those best/worst surveys very seriously. One has to make one's own mind about a place. Some of those best places are boring places.

The point I was making is that if you force people out of their cars, they hate it. Had a good example of the efficiency of public transport this morning: Oldest and Mother were waiting at the top of our drive in her car for the school bus to arrive. School bus arrives (late), oldest gets on new, expensive and highly subsidised bus. Bus tries to set off but clutch disintegrates. Oldest plus entire contents of bus transfer to car and all are delivered on time. Marvellous.

I'm afraid I find some members of the general public quite objectionable to share a bus with.

Me too! Rubbing shoulders with the grubby lower orders is quite objectionable!

You are citing public transport policy as the main reason why Nottingham doesn't score well in a 'beauty contest'?
My brother-n-law lives there and is a bit of petrol head but he is fan of the tram system which I have used and there are very good.
I am moving to near Chester and minor reasons for moving there is the good park-n-ride and the railway links to other parts of the UK (E.G not much more than two hours to London). Driving and parking in London fills me with horror.

"You are citing public transport policy as the main reason why Nottingham doesn't score well in a 'beauty contest'?" Not really - it was just an amusing opening post. "Driving and parking in London fills me with horror" You and me both! Yet the solutions to the above problem were: Reduce parking places Slow down traffic light changes Install bus lanes Install cycle lanes Build thousands of speed humps Great ideas eh? The war on the car also fills me with horror. When I stood for election, I said the only excuse for using a bus was extreme drunkeness. I stand by that statement.

Driving TO, driving in and parking in London fills me with horror. The worst bit is actually the M6 around Brum.
Surely trains and maybe other forms of PT of various sort help the motorist who won't leave the car at home.

True, but PT is woefully inefficient unless it is 75% full over 100% of the journey. I'm sure some services run at that level but the vast majority don't. Obviously there is a place for public transport but I object to the political objective of forcing as many people as possible onto it. Google "modal shift in transport" for evidence.

Not a lot of science in this thread is there, more about politics. If anywhere it should be under « Science Politics ».

The behavioural science of using public transport as opposed to using a private car might be a starting point. Or doesn't behavioural science qualify as a science?

I was on a train the other day and got chatted up by a very attractive young lady. I must trains use more.

The behavioural science of using public transport as opposed to using a private car might be a starting point. Or doesn't behavioural science qualify as a science? Thst's a good idea. I've heard some skewed ideas about public transport being better for your mental health. Not this Charlie, I can tell you. The last time I used a bus, it made me miss a flight. Apoplectic with rage and vowed never to sit on the stupid, inefficient, slow, non-smoking things again. ;D
