Arctic sea-ice melt - Remember, the satellite record only started in 1979.
From 1945-75 the world was in the mid-century cool period when the climatologists were predicting another ice-age. It was cooler then. Perhaps you don’t remember? I do, I was born in 1947.
If satellite measurements of arctic sea ice only began in 1979 it is not surprising that they reveal meltinging because it WAS (a bit) warmer compared with the preceeding cool period.
We know the world’s temperature oscillates in cycles. The era of so-called AGW, (1975-1998) and the era of satellite measurement of climate variables coincide.
What happened before that? We have historical reports which show that large areas of ice-free arctic lasting for decades are not uncommon within the last 150 years.
The fact that the beginning of satellite measurement of the Arctic sea ice concided with the end of the mid-century cooling is fortuitous for the AGW hypothesis but it is by no means “proof” that CO2 “caused” the increased summer ice-melt observed since 1979. That can be explained simply by “natural variation - it warms, it cools, it warms again - mainly due to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, the major INTERNAL climate “forcing” according to Dr Roy Spencer, that underwent the “Great Pacific Climate Shift” from cool to warm in 1977. After 1977 Alaska warmed rapidly and the Arctic sea ice began to melt in the summer.
Some people, including Susan Solomon, co-ordinating lead author of the AR4, think the gmt stopped rising in 1998. Hansen believes the gmt continues on ever upwards - but we all know he is forever adjusting the historical as well as the current data because he is obsessed with “proving” his alarmism is well-founded.
However, people have noticed!

Hide the Decline - Frank Lansner hidethedecline.eu/pages/posts/decline-temperature-decline-1940-78-the-cold-data-war-170.phpThe famous "trick" of Climatgate email fame not only hid Briffa's tree ring proxy temperature decline post-1960 but ALSO the instrumental decline from 1960-78 too! You can see in the top series of graphs how the mid-century cool period was gradually "disappeared". The CRU "tree ring proxy" team did the same with respect to the mid-century cool period as Hansen has done - just deleted it, effectively. The mid-century temperature decline shown by the tree ring proxies was REAL and it reflected the REAL mid-century cooling that was also shown in the instrumental record! These are the dirty tricks that Lord Oxburgh whitewashed with his perverse concept of "integrity".
