Many of these calls are made from domestic phones by employees working from home. I rarely use my phone so when they start their pitch I lay the handset gently on the table and get on with things. This blocks their phone until I put it back. Women in call centres, I usually ask how old they are and what they are wearing. Believe it or not, some of them tell me.

There is an amusing counterscript for use when dealing with cold calls: www.xs4all.nl/~egbg/counterscript.htmlI have used my own variation of the counterscript, I changed the question about dentists to one about eyes and visits to an ophthalmologist and how important it was for people to have their eyes tested. I then asked about headaches and migraines, one person did answer yes to having headaches so I suggested that this could be a symptom of ocular fatigue and asked about blurred or double vision. I managed to completely side track the call into a discussion about the callers headaches and eye problems.
