I note that Caroline Lucas (Green Party) is one of the Vice Presidents. This is the leader of a party that campaigned against nuclear power, which DIRECTLY resulted in the UK having a CO2 footprint some 40% higher/capita than our neighbour, France. When questioned on the Andrew Marr show, she agreed that nuclear power would have reduced our CO2 footprint substantially, but "now it was to late to build the reactors"! No mea culpa from her or her party about their role in it being "too late". Makes me sick. Her and her technologically illiterate brigade forced the government's hand on wind power, without having any idea of the ramifications of variability and the "firm generating" capacity needed to support it. Don't get me wrong, if we had vast Hydro resources and "firm" nuclear back-up, then I have no doubt that wind energy would help reduce CO2 from power generation, but we ain't. Just like if we had electric cars with batteries that could charge in minutes from non-CO2 generation and then have enough energy to provide 350 miles of autonomy, but we ain't. Still, I suppose having a degree in English Lit doesn't really give one much insight into the world of Science and Technology!...but she's great with words P

Personally, I like Caroline Lucas because her heart seems to be in the right place, however, I do think she has been unrealistic when expressing some of her views about nuclear power. Of course, what people say when not in power is very often different to what they say when in power, as we have witnessed with the Lib. Dems!

I would rather her intellect were in the right place, abacus.

I would rather her intellect were in the right place, abacus. The implication of which, is?

Then we should have built more wind farms! Her and her technologically illiterate brigade forced the government's hand on wind power, without having any idea of the ramifications of variability and the "firm generating" capacity needed to support it. But at least she is not recommending poisoning our world with radioactive waste, a disaster that would not be reversible.

Beamed down from the mothership robinpike? Complete with handy retorts? Pathetic.

I would rather her intellect were in the right place, abacus. The implication of which, is? The implication is that she is a deeply ignorant, slightly deranged and misguided woman. She shouldn't be given sharp objects, let alone political power.

That's a bit harsh. Myself, I think she's an idealist, but politics is about what is possible not what we would like the world to be.

I think views like hers are necessary in addressing the excesses of capitalism, however.

We definately need some moral brakes and financial scrutiny. Caroline Lucas provides neither. As churchill said: "Many complain of the unequal distribution of the blessings of capitalism; the miseries of socialism, however, are spread with great equality".

Absolutely. A great woman who rescued this country from the morass of socialism in the seventies. Wish we had someone similar now.

I have been out and about today.
Strange to report none of the wind turbines seem to be producing anything other than visible pollution.
Quite a bit of steam coming out of one of the nuclear stations though.
And I could not help noticing that either someone has been busy with a broom on the beach, or the tide is still coming in and out on a regular and very predictable basis.
It seems a shame - no it is shameful, that government policy, and I make no distinction as to the colour of that government, appears to have been formulated by the vociferous minority.
