Alpha decay is radioactivity in which the nucleus of an atom loses an alpha particle but what is an alpha particle?

Two protons and two neutrons -- the nucleus of a helium atom, which is how its nature was discovered.
Have alpha emitter in one side of apparatus, separated by a very thin glass wall from an evacuated tube. So alpha particles pass through the veyry thin wall, then that is as far as they get.
after enough time, take contents of evacuated tube, and do spectroscopy (pass current, see what light comes off).
Same spectrum as for helium, hence alpha particles are the same as helium nuclei.
Which anyone could have got off google for starters, so why bother asking such a question.
Might as well ask -- what is a giraffe......................

Might as well ask -- what is a giraffe...................... Because I know what a giraffe is. Im intrigued though, what do you expect me to ask? I can only ask a question I do not know the answer to. Now, your first sentence was clear enough but I could not relate to the rest because it assumes I already have knowledge of what you are talking about. Your job is to inform me and others at a basic level, have you not yet understood after all this time? Google cannot take the place of a proper teacher where a dialogue can take place, but then you do not want to enter into a meaningful dialogue, do you? Pity. How can someone who is supposed to have gone through higher learning keep being so unreasonable? Why do you have to keep playing games and not act like a sensible adult? I asked a perfectly reasonable question and you have hijacked it, as usual.

Another point about using Google is that it can often take a long time to find a site that gives a good, clear definition of whatever it is you need answered so why would I want to keep putting myself through that?
