The global warming of the first part of the 20th century and the mid-century cooling are well known. Aren't they? (Tip. Keep an eye on the left axis scale as well as the morphing shape of the slopes.) Mk I MkII The "adjustments" speak for themselves but read on here for detail www.real-science.com/smoking-gun-hansens-arctic-data......Meanwhile the Iceland Met Office say that “The GHCN “corrections” are grossly in error in the case of Reykjavik”. Good for them! Paul Homewood on WUWT says "Now that GHCN have created a false warming trend in Iceland and Greenland, and GISS have amended every single temperature record on their database for Reykjavik going back to 1901 (except for 2010 and 2011), we should have a look at the overall effect. All the 'hot action' is up north according the the latitude plot that accompanies the GISS anomaly map": notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2012/01/25/how-giss-has-totally-corrupted-reykjaviks-temperatures/

Steve Goddard says Hansen’s original data accurately showed the rapid warming during the 1920s, the 1940s temperature spike, and the rapid cooling during the 1970s. . . . By contrast, Hansen’s new corrected data makes no sense. He now shows early 1970s temperatures warmer than 1930s temperatures.... “Science News wrote this in 1975″ the weather in the first part of this century has been the warmest and best for world agriculture in over a millenium, and, partly as a result, the world’s population has more than doubled. Since 1940, however, the temperature of the Northern Hemisphere has been steadily falling: Having risen about 1.1 degrees C. between 1885 and 1940, according to one estimation, the temperature has already fallen back some 0.6 degrees, and shows no signs of reversal. Specific areas, of course, may experience changes markedly different from the average. During the warming period, temperatures in parts of Norway rose five times more than the hemisphere average, and since the cooling trend began again, Iceland’s temperature has dropped nearly 2.0 degrees, threatening continued existence of some crops.www.sciencenews.org/How are we to evaluate the validity of these “data corrections” when the author Hansen is a very strong advocate of catastrophic anthropogenic warming?

If Helen and STA were still with us I have no doubt they could explain away this "evolution" of the data. Looks more like "creationism" to me.
Sadly, without them, we just have to draw our own conclusions.

Hansen, along with Gore and Trenberth and 100 fellow travellers, (including Richard Bransen) are off on a cruise from Argentina to Antarctica. Jolly good season to choose! They will find the sea ice at its lowest seasonal extent. They do understand I suppose, that January is late summer in Antarctica? Anthony Watts says From the you’ve got to be effin kidding me department comes news of the epic journey to Antarctica. What do they hope to prove? I don’t know, it seems like nothing but a publicity stunt, especially since the sea ice trend in Antarctica is up in the last 30 years: Gore, Hansen, Trenberth to make Antarctic PR expeditionwattsupwiththat.com/2012/01/22/gore-hansen-trenberth-to-make-antarctic-expedition/

The *new* CRU global mean temperature data set.CRU launched its latest version of temperature in March 2012. It's called CRUTEM4 (replacing CRUTEM3) For Australia the data has been cooled prior to 1955 and warmed after 1995. The effect, of course, is to increase the steepness of the upward trend line. Ed Thurstan on WUWT writesIt is apparent from the data that CRUTEM4 temperature adjustments have, in part, been made with reference only to the earlier CRUTEM3 data, rather than raw temperature data. Further, the adjustments depend on the month for the data, and these adjustments are made for 20 or 30 consecutive years. In the case of Adelaide (946720), for 30 years from 1857, CRUTEM4 Lowers all January temps by 1.4oC Lowers all Feb temps by 0.9oC Lowers all March temps by 1.7oC With April to December all lowered by 0.5 to 1.1oC. Thereafter, there are no adjustments until 2000, when a smattering of adjustments appear, mostly raising the temperature. What reason could there be for making the following set of adjustments on Adelaide data for every year from 1857 to 1886 ?
