Now that the elusive boson has been found, should Peter Higgs get the Nobel Prize for Physics?

Not at all sure how the rules work Mak2, but most of them seem to be awarded for 'lifetime achievements' and I don't know if he has pursued this line of work, or simply set the hare running 50 odd years ago for others to chase.

They do not know if what they have found is in fact Higgs Bosun. They have more work to do

Does the Higgs Boson cause the Jet Stream? That would be useful to know. Then we could perhaps turn this bloody rain off!
It is 8am in Leeds and it is so dark and raining. The cloud must be miles thick over Leeds just now.

The physics Nobel Prize is awarded for a specific discovery, rather than a life's work. The rules say that the theory has to have experimental confirmation. So Prof. Higgs could not have been given the prize until now.
Most of the discoverers of new particles have received Nobel Prizes. If I remember correctly, J J Thomson got one for the electron, Chadwick for the neutron, Anderson for the positron and Yukawa for the muon.
Other particle physicists also had the idea of this boson at about the same time. Possibly the prize should be shared but I think Peter Higgs definitely deserves a Nobel Prize.

If I ever run to ground the person who invented the moron I will insist he gives his Nobel prize back. They are everwhere!

Why would Higgs want the prize? Does he want to be marked out as an idiot? Being an idiot appears to be the main criteria for winning nowadays.

Why so cynical? The physics prize is still worth while, although I am not so sure about some of the others. Anyway, he could probably use the money. If anyone needs an entertaining explanation of what it is all about, see the video in the link below, which was made before the existence of the Higgs boson was confirmed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUnDsNL_5nk&feature=relmfu

Now that the elusive boson has been found, should Peter Higgs get the Nobel Prize for Physics? It seems to me that no sooner have they discovered this particle or that particle they are then faced with a whole new set of questions which present even more of a challenge to answer. How do they know they have discovered the Higgs anyway? They might be on the wrong track! I often get the feeling that scientists discover that which they seek to discover and that perhaps the universe is really in the eye of the beholder in the sense that by using highly elaborate experiments such as the Cern Collider science constructs artificial models of what is really there.

It could be embarrassing if they discover any more elementary particles because the standard model is complete, now that the Higgs boson has been observed. Well, sort of observed. They have detected decay products that make it virtually certain that the Higgs particle is real.
It is an important discovery. The boson proves that the Higgs field exists and the Higgs field explains why particles have mass.
