Tommy Robinson has been gaoled today for breaching the peace and incitement to riot
He was arrested by the Police as he attempted to interview Pakistani-origin defendants arriving at Birmingham Crown Court to face charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with juniors and 'grooming'
I have no doubt that Mr Robinson did in some way transgress the laws of 'keeping the peace' and 'incitement to riot', but does he deserve a prison sentence?
Those of you that may not know who Tommy Robinson is may well remember the civil disturbances in Luton when the Anglian Regiment marched through Luton to exercise their Freedom of the City after their return from Afghanistan. It was well publicised beforehand that the Moslem population would take exception to the march and were planning a mass protest during the march. Mr Robinson, who grew up in Luton, knew this and organised a peaceful counter-demonstration to support the marching troops
The Moslems were allowed to protest but Mr Robinson's counter-protest was 'kettled'by the police
This incident was the kernel of the foundation of the EDL and Mr Robinson was a founder member of that organisation. Its purpose was to expose and oppose Islamic extremism, and to this end it organised marches in British cities that had large Moslem populations and (consequently) where Islamic extremism flourished. These marches gained notoriety because they were violently attacked by Leftist groups such as momentum and anti-fascists. The EDL was denounced in the press as a racist organisation, despite the fact that there were many ethnic minorities that marched with them
It seems the State was out to crush the EDL and Mr Robinson was eventually gaoled for Mortgage fraud - he had lent money to a mortgage applicant that had been dishonest in their application
This was Mr Robinson’s first offence and quite unusually, for such trivial amounts as were involved, he was gaoled. The police told him that if he did not plead guilty then his wife would be charged as an accomplice
Eventually he teamed up with the Quilliam Organisation and left the EDL. He is now an independent reporter on Islamic affairs, and it was in that capacity that he was arrested and gaoled in Birmingham today
Although there was undoubtedly a case against him - I have faith in the British Justice system - it does seem a little odd, this gaol sentence. There were just two people there, Robinson and his helper, asking questions of the defendants as they arrived at court. There was some outrage amongst the Pakistani-origin defendants at the questioning and video filming, and a van of 7 policemen arrived to arrest him
Take a parallel situation.
When the Stephen Lawrence enquiry was in progress, every day the murder suspects arrived they were subjected in almost riotous conditions to verbal and physical assault. The scenes outside the Court were a disgrace, but no one was ever charged with disturbing the peace or incitement to riot
Why was Robinson so charged for comparatively mild interviewing with just two people whilst a whole mob of people outside the Stephen Lawrence court were actually rioting
Are we becoming a selective Police State?
