For those of you who might have been impressed with the very mild March in central and Eastern USA there is also this to consider
Crystal Mountain Washington State – 14 ft of snow since March 1 by ROBERT on APRIL 2, 2012
“It looks like we’ll be skiing into summer again!” says Crystal Mountain Webpage. “That’s 36 more inches than last time this season.”
March roared in like a lion, and out like one too!
March 2011 total = 134″ March 2012 total = 170″ Season snowfall total last year at this time = 480″ Season snowfall total this season = 536″ …

That very same day, it snowed in Tilsworth, a mile or so off the A5, Watling Street, and lay. On the other side of the A5, in Tebworth it didn't, it rained. The road was built by the Romans almost 2000 years ago. See, that's what the Romans did for us, they ruined the weather. Saw a hare running across the field but he didn't seem particularly worried about the impending doom of extinction.

Poor little wild sods! If they're not failing to outrun the northward expansion of the heat they are freezing in the unseasonal snow! Who'd be a wild thing?

Oh, and I forgot, We drove up Bison Hill, it leads to Whipsnade Zoo amongst other things, it is so named because the bison are kept there, always have been. They were all out looking as bovine as ever, alongside, and with, the elephants, who have grown hairier [the bison always look as though they need an haircut] . So nature adapts.

Winter Hits Europe – Stockholm Has Coldest Day in 84 Years! Sweden Coldest Temperature In 20 Years! By P Gosselin on 3. Juni 2012 Parts of Europe are being gripped by unusual cold, even though the calendar says it’s meteorological summer. Now children in Sweden are finding out what snow is like – in June! Strangest warming I’ve ever seen. Winter pounds Sweden – and it’s summer! The English language The Local here writes that “Stockholm broke an 84-year-old cold record on Saturday, as the capital’s temperature only reached 6 degrees Celsius, the lowest June maximum daily temperature the city has seen since 1928.” Indeed, you could be excused for thinking that the current chill is more like winter than summer. It was actually colder in the capital yesterday than on Christmas Eve. ‘ The temperature was a degree lower than it was at Christmas in Stockholm, so it is colder. And it’s windier, too,’ said SMHI’s meteorologist Lisa Frost to newspaper Dagens Nyheter.” Just two days ago The Local here reported that snow blanketed northern parts. Residents in northern Sweden were forced to grab shovels rather than sun lotion on what was supposed to be the first day of summer, as much of the region was left covered in a thick blanket of snow on Friday. As much as 20 centimetres of thick, wet snow fell in parts of Västerbotten County, giving residents quite a shock when they woke up Friday morning.” The mercury also dropped to minus 6 degrees Celsius in one town, making it the coldest June Sweden recording in 20 years. The Local adds: The weather agency forecasts that the first weekend in June will feel more like the start of winter than the start of summer.”

And in the US they've had their warmest March on record. So what! www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/national/2012/3It's a little sad that after all this time posting on these boards you still haven't grasped one of the most fundamental points - the difference between climate and weather.

This thread happens to be about snow. This is "weather" in anyone's book.

As if Christchurch residents haven’t suffered enough, now freezing temperatures have closed roads, universities, schools, flights. Those living in cracked, earthquake damaged homes were already struggling to heat their dwellings. Earthquake damaged fireplaces are not permitted to be repaired and no new homes are to have solid fuel-burning fireplaces due to pollution. Now many are suffering power outages as the weight of the snow has brought down power lines. Further inland the mercury plunged to -11.2C. The only people cheering about The Big Freeze are the skifield operators and those heading for the slopes. The impact of this week’s snowstorm on the South Island can be seen in this image released by NASA. www.warwickhughes.com/blog/
