Practical solutions to real problems. You can't beat it. Hats off to the inventors wattsupwiththat.com/2011/01/09/poo-gloo-gaia-pans/#more-31235This illustration shows the inner workings of a Poo-Gloo device used to increase treatment of sewage in municipal waste lagoons. Each Poo-Gloo -- sold under the name Bio-Dome -- includes four nested domes with plastic packing (wagon wheel shapes) between them to provide a large surface area on which sewage-eating bacteria grow. A hose (red) sends bubbles (gray circles) upward through the Poo-Gloo, and the air helps pull wastewater up through the device (blue arrows). A new study shows Poo-Gloos provide a relatively inexpensive alternative to mechanical sewage treatment plans for small to mid-sized towns and cities outgrowing their sewage lagoons.

For about a decade I have contributed monthly to a charity called Wateraid and this morning received an email expressing thanks. This is what it said:
-------- Since this thread concerns sewage and the costs/benefits of water treatment I thought I would highlight this heartening New Year message.
Yes, the water closet is indeed an improvement on digging a hole in the ground and don’t let anyone try to persuade you otherwise! Electification and water supply save lives. In a world of burgeoning population this is ever more true.

Hmmmm a burgeoning population creates more waste - of all sorts.
Just wait till the developing countries decide that they want a piece of the affluent pie. And the developed world cries foul over global warming from their CO2! And who is going to provide the water to grow their food? Darfur was a conflict over water, Golan Heights was annexed so that the mountain could be riddled with holes to direct water to Jordan which is still at half level and the conflict there is not resolved yet.
People are the biggest pollution.
Now - anyone got any ideas on reducing that one (this side of Hitler)?
I thought not! But knowing what the problem is allows you to work around it. Denial is not a solution.
