In Praise Of Carnyx
Carnyx is undoubtedly the best example we have on this board of the ‘scientific method’
Never, since Edward de Bono invented thinking in 1972 (the greatest advance ever in the history of Human History) have I seen the application of Eddie’s theorems so assiduously applied, as by Carnyx
Carnyx has the true questioning mind that is the hallmark of real scientists. He refuses to accept dogma and questions and pokes the sacred cows that wander with impunity through the holy portals of science dropping their loads of shit to the admiring gasps of the True Believers
That is not for Carnyx. He will question anything, whatever the received wisdom may be, and he happily ignores or shrugs off the howling abuse that is the orchestral backing of those that consider themselves the Supremes of science
And his questioning, his probing, is not negative – it is positive, a search for alternative explanations to the received wisdom.
Undoubtedly this creativity carries him into rarified and sometimes questionable realms, but that is fine, as creativity was never nourished by clinging to what I known and accepted.
And he does all this with an unequalled eloquence, panache and a biting logic with sometimes a caustic dismissal of foolish protest
For we all know, (do we not?), that modern physics is on the cusp of knowledge; we know how to manipulate things, but are struggling to understand them. QM is typical and nearly all eminent physicists are agreed that we haven’t a clue what is going on. Cosmology is another field. All sorts of nonsensical ideas are bandied around that simply are not susceptible to scientific investigation, yet still they are classed as ’physics’ rather than, as they should be, metaphysics
Mathematics has been shown to be a colossal failure as an aid to understanding. It comes up with foolish impossibilities, which, because they are based upon a ‘science’ that has served us well, are followed blindly down self-evident dead ends. Ridiculous ‘concepts’ that ‘can only be understood mathematically’ are bandied around as if delivered from the Mount by Moses
And through all this noise, all this blather, sensible scientists tell us to beware, that we do not really understand.
And Carnyx is the epitome of that cautious voice, paradoxically abandoning caution in his search for the explicable, questioning, exploring alternatives, positing thought experiments. Here is a man that recognises and embraces the giant achievements of science – the Newtons, the Maxwells, the Einsteins that signpost the summit of human intellectual development, whilst at the same time explores, pokes, slyly teases and makes one wonder ’is this man mad, is he joking, is he taking us for a ride, or does he have a point?’
And the answer surely insights in an admixture of all four of these
But also here is a man who has accomplished things in life, an engineer, an aeronautic inventor, a man who has made his living by his wit, intelligence and inventiveness
So long may his maddeningly eloquent questioning, poking and teasing continue.
Weaker people, people that cling to the tramcar of conventional science as it trundles into realms of gobbledegook and nonsense, they will shout abuse, fearful that their precarious hold will on this tramcar driven by madmen (Hawking, Dawkin et al)
who demand subservience and shout opposition down with recondite mathematical equations that no-one understands, will yield and slip, and so they shout nonsense as if the tramcar is approaching the site of The Imperial War Museum (ding ding – next stop Bethlehem Hospital – yes Bedlam!)
Goodonya Carnyx. Here's to your febrile quill!
