Would anyone like to define autism, perhaps illustrating the definition with examples from your experience?

But please, let's have no-one PRETENDING to these disorders, as happened on the Beeb's Science board when two folk thought they would have a larf at their fellow boarders' expense - one claiming to be an Asperger's sufferer, the other an Obssessive compulsive. Can't remember who they were. I hope they are not HERE!

A young male relative of a friend of mine (now 18 years old) has Asperger's. He won't go on buses and doesn't like cars, or queuing. He won't go to the local shop to buy the odd item like lemonade or margarine.
My friend and the boy's relatives put the disprder down to food additives he ingested as a child because they noticed odd behaviour when he had imbibed fizzy drinks as a kid.
He is very nice and intelligent but he has these odd quirks (now improving somewhat) that prevent him conducting a normal everyday life.
He was excluded from his mainstream secondary school for long periods because the teachers picked on him and he would not tolerate it so I guess he was disruptive. He is a smart kid and kept up with school work effortlessly. But he ended up in Special School faute de mieux.
Very disturbing situation for his family.

The dislike of queueing means he won't go to the Job Centre or Benefits Agency so he has no job and no benefits either. His mother keeps him. It can't continue like this for ever! He attended a building training course in a desultory fashion for a while and there were hopes he might get a job out of it but that has not happened.

Would anyone like to define autism, perhaps illustrating the definition with examples from your experience? I've not had any personal experience of autism but I gather it is characterized by an inability for normal social interaction and highly repetitive behaviour patterns. That British guy who hacked into US computers a couple of years ago suffered from a the mild version of autism called Asperger Syndrome. I gather people with this condition tend to have an all consuming obsession with very narrow areas of interest which makes them very good at them but not much good at communication. (Could STA have this problem, I wonder). I don't think it is very well understood but has something to do with the way such people process information and usually it shows up very early. As far as I know it has nothing to do with food but I am no expert. Has his mother not sought help from local health services?

His mother is a teacher and is as well aware of social services provision for her son as could be expected. Everyone is at a loss how to proceed with him.
Maybe he will eventually grow out of his phobias.

What a terrible affliction it is! It must be devestating for the young man's parents to see a life's potentail wasted so.
What is the difference between Autism and Psychopathy? They seem to be similar in effect to me in that they both take no account of how others perceive them. Perhas it is that one of them simply does not care what others think?

I don't think what I am describing is a "serious case" although it is bad enough!
The boy in question is popular with his friends, intelligent and good company on the whole. But he is certainly handicapped by "something".
