Looks as if the worst possible scenario is devleoping. It is reported that a Catholic priest has had his thoat cut - the first sectarian assault in the history of Tunisia Crowds are chanting ant-Jewsih slogans in a country that has no record of Jewish pogroms Tunis has had brothels for hundreds of years- legally sanctioned brothels with resigstered prostitutes in a designated part of the city
These have now been closed down and the prostitutes dispersed
It is reported that Islamic Mutawas are prominent in the new political flux
In Egypt the Mislim Brotherhood are taking a prominent role in the new political situation
So democracy may bring what the west fears most
But then the west is ambiguous and hypocritical about democracy, aren't we?
Algeirs elected an Islamic government that was overthrown because the Yanks did not like it
Gaza elected Hamas which was immediaely outlawed by Europe and the US - the wrong sort of democracy you see
Of course the action of that weakling Obams in vetoing the UN resolution condemnig the Israeli illegal appropriation of teritory has not helped in the slightest
If ever there was a moment of US madness, then that must be it - in the midst of an Arab uproar and clamour for democracy, it gives unrestrained support to the illegal activities of its favoured one

This is not "democracy", nay, it is factionalism which is bound to be rife in a clan/tribal society. The overlay of Islamofascism doesn't help. But it is wrong to see the overthrow of an authoritarian regime in terms of a "democratic" impulse - it is is simply the rebellion of the oppressed and terminally fed up. Highly unlikely it will lead to what WE call democracy - the rule of law and respect/tolerance of minorities and oponents.
