In light of the deepening crisis in Libya and the reluctance of the UN to make any commitments to support the rebel forces, should powers such as the US and the UK take the initiative and show leadership in supporting the fight against tyranny? The UN is too compromised, in my opinion, to be an effective force for good and has little relevance in maintaining world peace. This conflict has shown how irrelevant the UN is in taking positive action in supporting the fight against evil dictators and highlights the role of super powers such as the UK and our closet allies, the US. God bless the Atlantic alliance!

And God smite down the UN cowards. Too busy worrying about polar bears I guess. So is the UN a contradiction in terms?

And God smite down the UN cowards. Too busy worrying about polar bears I guess. So is the UN a contradiction in terms? IN depends absolutely on US power. If it is powerless it is because the US wants it to be so. The latest veto by the US of the UN resolution condemning the illegal expropriation of Palestinain land was a typical example of US manipulation of the UN in its own interest

Of course it is. It's a toothless talking shop that, in order to flex it's pitiful muscles, turns on people that don't shoot back. i.e. normal people going about their everyday business.

It's not just the US that exerts influence, the other nations on the Security Council also have the right of veto over their pet interests. It really is a recipe for "do nothing".
As for Super Powers, wait until China starts throwing its weight around.

As for Super Powers, wait until China starts throwing its weight around. Yes, the permanent members will never agree. Russia usually disagrees with the USA anyway so it all a bit of a farce, still I suppose it prevents another world war - doesn't it?

The United Nations conducted a worldwide survey with one single question: "Would you please give your opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?" The survey was a huge failure: * In Latin America, they didn't know what please meant ... * In China, they didn't know what opinion meant ... * In the Middle East, they didn't know what solution meant ... * In Europe, they didn't know what shortage meant ... * In Africa, they didn't know what food meant ... * In the United States, they didn't know what the rest of the world meant ... source: www.jokebuddha.com/Nations#ixzz1Ffjn13P8
