The BBC has its favourite scientists.
It has little to do with their scientific credentials.

And not that many scientists WANT to be on TV shows, or present a whole series. Some seem to have opted for a specific career as a writer and presenter of a TV series, but you have to admit that doing this (and selling it first of all) take up a lot of time that other people would rather spend on research and teaching (or just lounging about!).
Seems you can't have it all -- those who have the highest scientific credentials aren't going to have the time to write and present pop-sci series for the BBC.
