But surely UK Ordnance survey grid references are in longitude/latitude?

well now moveabletype does say there are errors of up to 150 metres (good enough) depending on the GB and World system of converting Lng/Lat and they do say it is not a simple formula. The good news is that they give JavaScript code.
Now why does my SatNav at the local Coop say 51.75488 North 2.28307 West
When Streetmap says 206235 380530
I am calculating as we speak but I don't see the connection

You can convert between them but the calculation isn't simple: www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/freefun/geofacts/geo1188.html

Why bother? Lat long is generally a maritime system while grid ref is a land based set up.

<quote>why bother</quote> because to not bother is unscientific. And not community minded. and if you were a Folkie in a strange area and wanted to find a Folk event while you were there - possibly on business and nothing to do otherwise during the evening, you could do no worse than visit a website hosted by someone who does BOTHER. see www.users.waitrose.com/~cresby/fcctest3.htmand choose a town Streetmap gives me the Eastings and Northings (which correlate well with OSGR) JavaScript gives me the radii and the ability to train my crow (wot flies) to avoid the estuary & river Severn. Why bother never made anything - whereas mistakes do. In fact I have learned so much from my mistakes - I am thinking of making another one. Like using the grid references to plot locations over a map of the area I cover. And not a lot of Village Halls have post codes - don't ya know. Nor do all the best pubs have web presence. Which is how I (try to) do it at a distance.
