I was idly watching mind-numbingly boring TV last night and saw a stupid programme where life gurus could save you a fortune on your living expenses. Most of it was rather puerile, but one tip caught my attention.
Apparently cheap cola is a good substitute for toilet cleaner. (It is of course another scenario as to whether all cola is best poured down the toilet, but I digress.)
I have in the past used cheap vinegar, but obviously a 20p bottle of cola represents a good saving.
But my question is, if it is a good toilet cleaner what the hell does it do to your gut, or your teeth?

Er, Coke contains a lot of phosphoric acid, plus a small amount of carbonic acid that evaporates off.
For the WC it will probably work on limescale and certainly on any iron stains. Coke is great for de-rusting as it turns the iron oxides into phosphates, and makes a good primer ... if you wash off the sticky sugar.
So, try Diet Coke, and let us know ...
PS. I heard a legend long ago about a Schoolteacher who gave a demo to his class on the power of Coke. A lump of steak rotted quite quickly, and a tooth disappeared altogether after 48 hours. Was this an Urban Myth?

I rather think that might have been an urban myth Carnyx. I heard it as well some years ago.
Can you imagine the mileage the competition would have got if they had made that public knowledge. But maybe they should employ a new 'snake oil' tactic. 'Look what it does to the bog, (Pan to cruddy then sparkling bog pan) would you let your children drink toilet cleaner?
Primer? What for, bare steel? Washing the sugar off might defeat the object. I know from experience that if we bead blast steel unless you paint it PDQ you get a surface film of iron oxide - within a couple of hours.

I mean primer for very rusty steel that has been treated with rust-remover ( aka Phosporic acid, same as the stuff in Coke) so that the little black scabs of iron phosphate will seal in the corrosion .. then you whack a grey paint undercoat and there you are!
If you have run out of rust-remover it is not unknown to derust small parts; nuts, bolts etc. by putting them in a glass of coke for a day or so ... and then washing off the sugar coating.

Um, that post didn't make a whole lot of sense. Don't want to be sniffy but do you have a habit, or are you an American to whom Coca-Cola is a national emblem?
