EU unveils plans to pay fishermen to catch plasticwww.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/may/04/eu-fishermen-catch-plasticTrial project aims to provide fleets with an alternative income source income to reduce pressure on fish stocks Fishermen will be paid to catch plastic, rather than fish, under bold new plans from the EU's fisheries chief, aimed at providing fleets with an alternative source of income to reduce pressure on dwindling fish stocks. Maria Damanaki, commissioner for fisheries, will unveil a trial project in the Mediterranean this month, which will see fishermen equipped with nets to round up the plastic detritus that is threatening marine life, and send it for recycling. ----------- Uh-oh! How long before somecanny fisherman finds an easy way round this that saves on the trouble of actually going to sea?

....or his brother/cousin will discover a source of plastic waste and with his lorry, will start tipping it in the sea at a handy nearby headland, to allow the prevailing current to carry it to his brother's/cousin's trawler that just happens to be laying off the coast. You're very cynical MM, and I expect Mr Smith will very suprised and hurt when He reads this. StuartG
