carried away with unsupported politically motivated hypotheses. Unsupported? Politically motivated? The world is getting warmer. An observed fact, which even you admit sometimes, depending where you have decided to place the goalposts. It will continue to get warmer, even after we stop producing CO2. This is inevitable because of the Earth's thermal inertia. Global warming if we add CO2 to the atmosphere was predicted in the 19th century. To claim that it was politically motivated is absurd. So, faced with the uncomfortable facts, the only questions are about exactly how bad it will get, and what should we do about it. And yes it is scary, but that word does not mean the same as untrue.

A message from 1991... "Drastic, precipitous and, especially, unilateral--steps to delay the putative greenhouse impacts can cost jobs and prosperity and increase the human costs of global poverty, without being effective." Well, we haven't moved on from there, in fact we've moved backwards, mainly because, surprise surprise, the more learnt the more is realised how little is known. That statement doesn't include that total disregard is taken of the social impacts of policies, or indeed 'human nature'. Added to all this are the 'charlatan' activities of various groups [mainly political] to seek financial reward and power on the back of so-called 'green leglislation'. Does anyone remember the 'seat-belt' leglislation years back, after it was passed into law it was found that certain politicians had profited by their 'insider' knowledge. I fully realise that this will fall on mainly 'deaf ears' due mainly to inertia but also incredulity. The word 'putative' is not one I would use now, but was used in 1991, any criticism is 'hind-sight', because things are less sure now than then. The scare-mongering is not scary, Eamonn, it is risible.
The fact that greenhouse gases warm the earth above what the temperature would otherwise be is no foundation whatsoever on which to found a catastrophic global warming scenario.
Climate changes, climate cycles, live with it, adapt to them, accept the challenges. In most individuals' lifetimes these changes, anyway, are quite imperceptible so quit worrying. There is a limit to what we can do protect ourselves from the periodic and largely unpredictable natural disasters, acts of god, call them what you will. Nevertheless adaptation strategies (within reason) are the only sane strategies and what should be pursued. Everything else is hubris based on ignorance or a money-spinning scam.
